Today we actually left Rome. We took the metro and train to an excursion called Ostia Antica. This was an old Roman city that was preserved really well because it was flooded over and preserved with mud from the Tiber River. We even met another American couple on the train who were using the same guide book as us!
The tour began in an old cemetery part of the city and then progressed to shopping areas, temples, and all sorts of other buildings. Some of our favorite spots included the baths and a public latrine. There was also a temple to Ceres with a square around it that had beautifully preserved mosaics. The theater was really neat because it is in such good shape that they will still do concerts today!
After Ostia Antica, we slowly made our way back to central Rome. First we stopped to see the Baths of Carcalla. On the way there we did see the pyramid, which was being worked on and not open. We walked past old Roma walls o. The way to the baths as well. The Baths of Carcalla were extremely impressive. A big factor was how huge this building used to be. Just huge! It would be like going to a resort spa I today's world. There were also a lot of mosaics still visible, so you could imagine just how grand the baths used to be.
After the baths, we made our way back to the hotel via metro. We had dinner, packed, and are ready Togo tomorrow!
